Reviews/Feedback:
Yes Pamelor has been the only drug to manage my depression. I have been on and off it since 1982. It is the best antidepressant on the market!
Working my my Migraines I was put on a small doseage of 50mg per day for prevention of Migraine Headaches. It seems to be working very well for that. It also is giving me some relief in the dept of depression. It is 1 of 6 meds in my cocktail. I am just hoping that the weight gain side effect doesn't get me.
Worked okay for me I took Nortriptyline from 2000 to 2004. I took 10mg at bedtime to start and gradually increased to 50mg. It was prescribed to help achieve more restorative sleep to stop pain during the day from Fibromyalgia. It really didn't help with sleep but it did help with the stabbing pain during the day. Also if I missed a dose I had horrible nausea and withdrawals. A sleep specialist switched me to Trazadone and it has worked much better for me. I sleep much better and am able to get up in the morning without feeling like a zombie.
Worked great but caused dry mouth I took Nortriptyline for about 2 years in the mid-80's. It was my first antidepressant and worked great for me. I really felt quite normal while taking it. The only side effect was an extremely dry mouth. That was one of the reasons that I eventually decided to quit taking it. However, a few years later, I ended up on meds again, this time on Zoloft.
While it worked, it worked! I took this about 9 months. It reduced the frequency of my migraines but eventually they crept up again. I did experience weight gain. It also helped with the co-morbid depression.
Vertigo I had problems primarily with vertigo and dizziness due to migraine. I woke up with it and it stayed for weeks into months. I had dymentia type conditions as well with forgetfulness and inability to function and think clearly. Regular dosage helped eliminate the problem over two to three week period. However, had to increase dosage from 10MG to 25 MG due to effectiveness diminishing with long term use.
treatment for depression in bipolar Tricyclics have been the only effective treatment for my depressive episodes. while I can still cycle to mania, but the depakote tends to knock it out stat. I have been relatively stable for over a year. I think the treatment for depression is JUST AS IMPORTANT as treatment for mania.
To prevent migraines... I take 30 mg Nortriptyline once a day, at bedtime, to prevent migraines. It DOES lessen the frequency. I get one or two a month, sometimes none, and before I was having them a couple times a week - for 3 days at a time. When I don't take it, the migraines come back.
This drug, at 25 mg per day before sleep, has controlled my chronic back pain and failure to get REM sleep for >15 years. I've never been clinically depressed, but I had very frequent, debilitating muscle spasms that culminated in a hospitalization of a couple of weeks in the early 90s. The neurologist who came up with this was on the cutting edge back then, and I've stayed on because the pain would come back every time I tried to quit. Unfortunately, I gained 15 pounds the first month and appetite has been a problem ever since. Overall, probably worth it; I have a stressful life that I cope with well, and I can take the weight off if I really starve myself.
The only antidepressant that worked I took it right before I started being treated for hypothyroidism, and this antidepressant worked even without the thyroid treatment - which is amazing, since I'd been a total invalid for a while at that point. I'd sleep for 16h a day, had terrible muscle pains that wouldn't let me even wash my own hair. This medication made me feel human again. After my thyroid was stabilized, I was weaned off it. I never had any side effects other than a bit of dry mouth.
the neuropathy pain in my feet were so bad I didn't feel like it was worth living with! From the first night I took this I have had zero pain. The side effects however have been constipation and weight gain. I had gain alot of weight due to my foot pain and no I have been gaining more. I hope to find an anwser for the weight, but I can not go back to that horriffic pain. It has been a God sent!!!
Taking for L/2 hnp, L4-5 bulges,L5-s1 slip & deg disc & possible piriformis syndrome. Pain level in butt & legs up to an 8 of 10 at times, sitting was excruciating and I couldn't even stand the bedsheet to touch my left leg/foot. I had a level of 5-6 often. At first on this drug, had heart palpitations, crazy non-stop dreaming except to jerk awake, diarrhea, nausea, eye twitches. started at 10mg a day. Side affects x 4weeks, now none! I've been on it 8 months and it doesn't even really make me sleepy (bummer). Now taking 30mg a day two pills in pm, one in am. On pain-free days I think drug is great. On bad days, not so great! But bad days now around level 4-5 w/lots of 0-2 days now. I keep up exercise, home physical therapy, ice, stretching, & rest & steroid shots though, it's a multi-pronged approach. I advise to titrate up really slowly, less of a shock that way. I'm trying to avoid having to take narcotics, and trying to avoid Neurontin; afraid I'll want to stab somebody with a salad fork on that stuff after reading it's reviews. (But,local pharmacist says Neurontin mostly just makes you sleepy and someday I may have no choice) Right now, this is helping some, not interfering with my life and I can still titrate up to 50mg a day if needed. Good luck to all of us nerve pain sufferers-many of us look & try to act quite normal, but spend a lot of time in misery.
