Reviews/Feedback:
Usually a good med for my 4 y/o daughter's ear infections. This was given to her for 10 days, went back and still had it, JUST as bad. Was scripted for Augmenten(?sp?) for 10 days. Went back after that one and it was still there. Now on Bactrim and am running fevers, does not seem any better. ENT apt for end of month for poccible tubes.
this was one of the anitobiotics that my daughter was prescribed after having her ear infection. She was prescribed 3 different at different times of course and it was the only one that worked. She loved the taste and was extremly easy to give. I didnt have to wrestle her to give it to her. It really made my life easier.
Omnicef is well-tolerated I actually take Omnicef twice a day, but the input only had once a day listed. I had been off of antibiotics for five months due to liver damage (Ketek), and Omnicef was the first antibiotic I went on after that hiatus. I had asked my Lyme M.D. about it because so many of my Lyme friends say it was the best-tolerated antibiotic they've been on.

It helped get me back to the point I had been at prior to my five months off (during which my symptoms worsened a lot), but it has not improved me beyond that. Basically, I regained lost ground but now I've plateaud. However, there have been almost no side effects for me. My Lyme M.D. eventually added an intracellular antibiotic to my regimen.
My now 2 yr old has used this medication many times. The only side effect that he gets is the red stools, which is a common side effect of this medication. It is normal. He takes this without any fuss. It works wonders on his ear infections.
It works, but... Omnicef was prescribed by my physician right before Christmas for a sinus infection. I wonder if he was pushing an expensive drug due to some "deal" reached with the pharmacutical company. It was the most expensive antibiotic ever prescribed. I need them very seldom, so it is not like he was looking for one that my system had not yet built up a tolerance. Not only that, I experienced the entire time I took the drug the nuisance "Montezuma's Revenge." I know enough to stay hydrated during this time, so it was not that big of a deal. Just want others to be aware. It works, but...
I honestly wish my prescription had lasted for more than 10 days. I was prescribed a 10 day round of Omnicef when my ear infection rebounded two weeks after completing a 5-day Z-pack prescription. It got rid of my ear infection, I had no GI problems at all, and there has been no rebound in my ear infection. Surprisingly,I also experienced a wonderful side effect of having my acne COMPLETELY clear up. My skin went from oily, splotchy, and covered in white heads and black heads, to being smooth balanced and acne free. I have not had better skin since the age of 9! I even had compliments at work. People told me my skin glowed! I hated getting off the antibiotic because it did help my skin so much. Now I'm back to the same oily acne prone complexion I had before. So I am actually very pleased with this medicine. It did what it was supposed to for me (cleared up my ear infection)with bonus (cleared up my acne) and no side effects. Shame I couldn't keep taking it.
Few Side Effects on Omnicef I have not noticed any serious side effects on Omnicef and my herx was not as bad as many I've read about.

Drug Uses

Omnicef is effective against susceptible bacteria causing infections of the middle ear (otitis media), tonsils (tonsillitis ), throat, larynx (laryngitis), bronchi (bronchitis), lungs (pneumonia), and skin and other soft tissues.

How to use

Omnicef is taken once or twice daily, depending on the nature and severity of the infection. The capsules or suspension can be taken with or without food. Patients with advanced renal disease may need to take lower doses to prevent accumulation of cefdinir since it is eliminated from the body by the kidneys. For adult infections the usual dose is 300 mg every 12 hours or 600 mg per day for 5-10 days depending on the nature and severity of the infection. The recommended dose for children 6 months to 12 years of age is 7 mg/kg every 12 hours or 14 mg/kg per day for 5-10 days depending on the infection. For most infections once daily dosing is as effective as twice daily dosing, though once daily dosing has not been evaluated for the treatment of skin infections or pneumonia.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Omnicef is a semi-synthetic (partially man-made) oral antibiotic in the cephalosporin family of antibiotics. The cephalosporin family includes cephalexin (Keflex), cefaclor (Ceclor), cefuroxime (Zinacef), cefpodoxime (Vantin), cefixime (Suprax), cefprozil and many injectable antibiotics. Like other cephalosporins cefdinir stops bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from forming walls that surround them. The walls are necessary to protect bacteria from their environment and to keep the contents of the bacterial cell together. Bacteria cannot survive without a cell wall. Omnicef is active against a very wide spectrum of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Streptococcus pyogenes (the cause of strep throat); Hemophilus influenzae; Moraxella catarrhalis; E. coli ; Klebsiella; and Proteus mirabilis. It is not active against Pseudomonas. Therapeutic uses of cefdinir include otitis media (infections of the middle ear), infections of soft tissues, and respiratory tract infections. It was approved by the FDA in December of 1997.
