Reviews/Feedback:
yes and no Neurontin was the first mood stabilzer I ever used, when I was first diagnosed as bipolar II/borderline personality disorder. The only side effects I remember (It was 6 years ago that I was taking it) were an increase in clumsiness (my depth perception is not the best to begin with!) and a small weight gain, not more than 10lbs; I was too skinny to begin with , so that was not a big deal. I don't know if the clumsiness was due to the Neurontin, one of the other drugs I was on, or the combo, but it was noticeable. I'm on the klutzy side anyway, but I was colliding with door frames and tripping over my feet and getting spatially disoriented.

My only real problem was remembering to take it three times a day. I often forgot my mid-day dose.

My mood swings were much less wild, but I was still creative and had energy.

I stopped taking it because (and yes, I am aware of how unreasonable this will sound) I became very resentful of having to take four kinds of meds a day, of carrying around a pill box, and I hated my shrink. My shrink was very paternalistic and didn't really listen to what I wanted as far as meds went.

I would consider using Neurontin again, now that I have a therapist who's wonderful and communicates with my shrink about my meds and symptoms.

Wow, this is really long! Sorry!
Years without relief until Gabapentin I was diagnosed with depression for 23 years until I was rediagnosed as bi-polar 1.
Gabapentin completely and totally altered my life.
I became a "normal person" functioning without the continual UPs & DOWNS i had experienced for years after trying propbalby evry anti-depressant marketed. I use trazadone as well for my depression but can never truly express the difference that Gabapentin made in my life
Yeah they do work Neurontin is for me the best anti-depressant I've tried. I take 3 mg's of klonopin along with them. This is a great combination. I would with out a doubt recommend them. They help immensely with the benzo caused depression. My life is right now is at a very likeable point. The only side-effect that I can think of is slight euphoria (probably due to the combo with klonopin). They also help a lot with irritability.
yawn This worked so well, especially at lower doses. It also helped with my anxiety and the rapid cycling of thoughts. My life became so out of control though, that my dose was so high I was sleepy all the time so I was switched to topamax. I still recommend the neurontin.
Wow! I've just stopped taking effexor for my depression. I experienced the worst withdrawal. I mentioned to my psychologist that I had felt good when I was taking gabapentin for my back pain. I didn't find out until then that gabapentin was used for mood disorders. I started taking it again last week and I feel great. It stabilizes my mood and really decreased anxiety. I did notice though that if I don't take my dose on time I suffer a terrible relapse and practically can't stop crying until the meds kick in about two hours after I take it. Otherwise, I rather enjoy the "drunk" feeling I get when the drug first kicks in. I haven't experienced any other side-effects so far. I will definitely stay on this for as long as it takes.
Worth a try I was put on Neurontin by my Rheumatologist a few years ago. He prescribed it for me b/c I started to have neuropathy of my hands and feet. It does help with the neuropathy.
Works, but expensive This works great for my pain along with tramadol and tylenol. I don't have a lot of bad side effects - the balance problems go away after you just start taking it. You have to take it like it says - you just have to, or it won't really work right.

Mentally I am fuzzy but I don't know what causes it - the FMS itself I think - I did try to stop the neurontin to see if it was the pills, but the fuzzy brain only got fuzzier.

One big drawback is that my insurance only covers it at the high rate, so it is 60.00 a month. ACK.
works well for me This one doesn't seem to get strong results in clinical trials as a primary mood stabilizer, but it works well for me. I have tried all of the major mood-stabilizers--depakote (didn't work well; side-effects); tegretol (didn't work well; major side-effects); lamictal (rash); and lithium (works ok; but some side effects). All the antipsychotics I tried caused mania, akathesia or td-like symtoms. Neurontin actually cuts my mania faster than any of the others. The main (continuing) side-effect for me is some cognitive impairment, but it's not as generalized as that of lithium. I have ADD as well and the stimulants seem to make up for this SE. Doesn't do too much for depression. I have BPI and right now this is the only mood stabilizer I take.

I take the generic, which with my insurance is only $15. The regular price would be $226.
Works w/o many side effects for me Had a terrible time with Lithium and Depakote side effects, but the only one I noticed with Neurontin is drowsiness, so I only take 1 in the a.m. and 2 at night.
As a side benefit--I'm going through menopause and have had very few hot flashes--which I have read that Neurontin is helpful at preventing.
Works very well for pain caused from nerve damage in my leg due to back surgery. I have noticed an increase in headaches and a definite increase in my weight.
Works very well for me when the pain of this illness gets nasty. I don't take it regularly, just during flare-ups. It does give me a dizzy kind of "high" which would be a problem for normal life, but my life isn't normal due to my illness. What I mean is that I am no longer to work anyway, and I only take it when I would be otherwise useless anyway. The high feeling isn't unpleasant, but I wouldn't personally drive if I was taking lots. "Lyrica" seems to work better, but is much more expensive. If you have neuropathic pain from CFIDS, then I would strongly recommend this or Lyrica.
I take 400 - 800 mg at a time, 2 to 4 times a day depending on my pain level.
Works very well for depression. I was on several ssris and effexor but none made me feel good. they all blunted me emotionally and made me feel like crawling out of my skin.
soon s i took the first dose of neurontin i felt good and i mean genuinely good. took the edge off completely but didnt make me sleepy. Awesome for anxiety and depression. it made me smile again for the first time in years.
