yes it works I have been taking amitriptylene for several years for fibromyalgia. My dosage varies depending on the severity of my symptoms. Right now 30 mg allows me to sleep through the night. I do wake up groggy, but not as bad as when I was not on the medication. Before trying amitriptylene I woke up several times each night and was exhausted all the time. The exhaustion fed my chronic pain which in turn further affected my sleep. Amitriptylene is not a miracle drug, but it does allow me an almost normal lifestyle.
YAWN YAWN YAWN!! I was prescribed this for stomach pains! Apparently it works really well for functional dyspepsia (my problem). I had to end up around 50mg to see the benefit (maybe more or less). Started at 10mg and my was I tired all day long!! This never wore off, so I cut it in half to 5mg, felt ok. Went up to 7.5mg (by cutting the tablet into silly little bits with a blade knife) felt ok. So i slowly went back up to 10mg! and bamn the tiredness hit me again!!
What a shame as that was the only thing that could have gotten rid of my stomach issue!! Now i am stuck with it for life!!!
Damn side effects!!
Wow it helps with pain With having MS and plagues in my neck from the disease, I unfortunately have severe neck pain.
The Amitriptyline not only helps control pain, it
aslo helps me rest more at bedtime and subdues my crying spells from the pain. The down side of it
is that it makes you drowsy where you feel slow
and in a state of feeling in la la land. I would much rather be in that state than crying in pain
all day. With this drug experience I would say to
start taking this drug slow when elivating the dose. This past time I went from 25 mg to 50 mg
and couldn't stand up the next morning. I had to
lay down until it wore down. I increase my dose a half a pill more for a couple days and keep increasing every couple days until your where your
doctor wants you to be.
Would be great without the side effects I took this medication as Elavil and as the generic and noticed a difference between the two. Both were extremely effective and both had way too many side-effects, but the generic also felt rougher and more buzzy. Both helped me sleep better although the first few days after starting it or increasing a dose, I was groggy all the next day. Both gave cotton mouth but I got used to it. Both helped reduce fibromyalgia pain and migraine frequency and severity. Both increased my energy. Both interfered with meditation. Both made me gain a lot of weight when I was in my 40s, but not in my 30s. In my 30s, I had to stop taking it after 3 years because it started to interfere with my night vision, making my eyes too sensitive to light. Years later I took it again, without the vision problem but stopped because of the weight increase. Stopping was not easy--despite tapering, I went through terrible withdrawal (suicidal depression, severe muscle pains) that was only eased by starting up zoloft.
works well - The few times that I have not taken it, I have had problems sleeping.
Works I have been using this for about 5 years now. It will make you sleep. It is the only thing I have tried that works for me (but I'm not done searching). What works can be different for everyone. I am having to change because of side effects. It leaves me with a hangover effect the next day. I'm getting brown spots on my skin and I gain a lot of weight. Don't let that deter you from giving it a try.
works great I have had so few side effects from it, it is non addictive and it puts me to sleep and keeps me asleep. When I first started taking it, for about the first week or so, it was hard to function the next day-- I was very drowsy, but that went away. Now I only notice that I am more thirsty than usual.
Works for Me! I was prescribed Amitriptyline in 1996 for sleep problems and muscle pain, which at the time I didn't know were caused by Fibromyalgia. Within a few weeks I noticed that I was sleeping much better and my muscle pain was much less. I tried to stop taking it a month ago as I wondered if I could cope without it, but my muscle pain is returning and I find I wake up very easily during the night, finding it difficult to get back to sleep. So I am going to start taking it again from tonight! Unlike many other contributors to this website, I experienced no weight gain whatsoever. I do get a dry mouth but that is gone by morning. No other side effects that I know of.
Works for me The UK brand I take is Alpharma.
I use this drug because it works for me, despite the side effects.
Works For Me After l yr of taking Elavil, read all the bad stuff about it, so discontinued it. Prior to taking it, I could not sleep more than 2-3 hrs/night I did not have trouble going off altho I know others have. However, within few mos. I was not sleeping thru the night & went back on it. Can usually get 7/8hrs. without feeling hungover. Really grateful for the sleep!!!
Works fine....hardly any side effects This drug was prescribed to me for migranes. I was concerend about the weight gain (as I read other messages here) and my doctor told me that the 25 mg/1 x a day was not enough to gain any weight. So, I bought a scale to be sure, and sure enough....he was correct. NO weight gain! The drowsiness went away after a few weeks, and the dry-month is still with me, but I always carry some sort of mint in my purse. Other then that..this medicine is working great for me. No headaces. Maybe 1-3 a month and regular tylenol works.
Worked great for ten years, but then... I was first diagnosed as Dysthimic in my early 20's and Elavil was the drug they put me on. I did have a little dry mouth and dry eyes, but otherwise it was a great mood elevator. It was inexpensive, easy to take and I just made it a part of my lifestyle. I was very sexually active at the time and it seemed to have no adverse effect on my activities. The, after being on it for about a decade I started noticing tingling sensations in my fingers, sometimes to the point of numbness. A short while after that I found that I was very hyper, talking a lot, finding it hard to sit in my seat - pacing, and not sleeping as well as I had been at times. I told my doctor this and we switched to another tricyclic, Pamelor, which seemed to work well until I was switched to an SSRI when they came out. Still, for what I needed at the time, it was a great help for me and the simple side effects were well worth the positive outcome until the more difficult side effects hit after 10 years of use. If you're taking an SSRI and having problems, Elavil could be just the thing for you...
