Reviews/Feedback:
Works well for me...but after about 46 yrs on this drug..I have develop nueropathy...a side effect from long term use that the Drs were not aware of when I first began.
No other ill effects. Overall...it is a great drug...as long as you follow directions. I have had over 15 yrs with no seizures as a result of taking my meds daily! Can't over emphasize the importance of NOT missing any dose!!!!
works great when you take it as prescribed
worked but couldn't tolerate I took Dilantin when I was first diagnosed with epilepsy. First couple of weeks were great. Seizures lessened as the dose went up more and more, then 3 weeks into it I started getting fatigued, hot/fevered, and 6 weeks in, I started rashing. My doc took me off it b/c of the allergies, and just a fair warning, he put me on tegretol next, which I was also allergic to--apparently they are very close so if you are allergic to one I wouldn't try the other unless you just have to, esp not with newer meds out now. One benefit is certainly the cost, though--compared to Keppra, Topemax, etc. it is very cost efficient.
will not use generic allergic reaction to phenobarbitol <anger>
When I first took Dilantin it made me tired and I had strange dreams. After about 3 or 4 months, the drug normalized in my system and there were no adverse effects. I am just concered about the long term affects. I have been taking the drug for four years.
tried and true I was put on Dilantin to treat my complex partial seizures and was warned that it would be sedating at first. Well, even though I started with a tiny dose of only 30mg once a day, I was stumbling around and had to sleep all the time until I was gradually worked up to 100mg three times a day. My seizures came under control fairly quickly.
It was then I began to notice I was stumbling around again, my eyes were seeing double and I was feeling a paranoid feeling, like people were following me and watching me. My neurologist had done a blood level of my dilantin just a couple of days before, and he called me on the phone to tell me I was at a toxic level. I was relieved it was a matter of just adjusting my medication instead of me going mad.
I never experienced the gum hypertrophy that is common on dilantin and only a slight elevation of my liver blood tests. Once I got over the sedative effects it never gave me any problems.
treated for 45 years dilantin400mg.plus120 mg. pheno daily
Thoughts on Dilantin I was on 600mg of Dilantin for quite a while. It is very important to regulate your Dilantin level by having blood test done periodically. Changes in your body's chemistry (especially for women) cause Dilantin levels to fluctuate. It is also important to know the signs of a Dilantin overdose-as my levels were at a toxic level and I didn't realize it was a result of my Dilantin.
This med has decreased my seizures greatly, I am also currently on Zonisimide for partial seizures. I previously trid Keppra, Depekote, Tegritol, Trileptol, Zongran none of which I could stand. Either they didn't work or they had terrible side effects. This med IS NOT PERFECT, my levels have gone up and down. The last time my levels went up my allergies were bothering me badly and I missed the sighns until the level got to 50.9. All meds have side effects but the side effects of Dilantin I can tolerate for the most part. My only gripes are the up and down levels and the dental problems.
This med did reduce my seizures however I do have the rash on my face and my gums bleed and swell horribly. It is a big problem because I knocked half my teeth out having seizures. But it does help prevent my seizures. I've been taking it for about 10 years.
This has kept my husband seizure free for 6 1/2 years so far but we found out that the generic drug to this does not stay in his system for some reason so he has to have name brand only.
THE OLD ONES ARE BEST! I HAVE TRIED OTHER MEDS. OVER THE YEARS WITH TERRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS AND SOME EVEN MAKING ME WORSE, BUT I ALWAYS COME BACK TO EPANUTIN AS IT HAS NO SIDE EFFECTS FOR ME AND OVER TIME MY FREQUENCY OF FITS BECOME LESS AND LESS! FOR ME, I WOULD MUCH RATHER PUT UP WITH THE ODD FIT THAN SUFFER SOME OF THE SIDE EFFECTS THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH OTHER MEDS, IE, SIGHT DAMAGE AND SEVERE DEPRESSION! I HAVE EVEN GONE 4 YEARS CLEAR BEFORE ON THIS MED!
