Reviews/Feedback:
yes it works good
Yeah it has worked for me but I dont think I need it anymore. I think I was just scared before I had my back surgery and Im great now......................
Wow, is this what normal is. This med is like bricks being lifted from my chest. Started slow at 250 morning and 500 at nite. Only minor problem is that there is ringing in my,what feels like my whole head. Something good is hapening in the brain. Feels like i am much more organized and get things done. I don't think this drug is for every one.
Worth the price This medication in the extended release version may cost a bit more on your co-pay or out of pocket expenses but it is worth it. Stabilizes mania and a great augment if you are taking an ssri for your depression. Side effects are overstated.
Works well, but with side effects I've had JME since 1999 and Depakote was the first medication prescribed. I've not had any seizures since (was having grand mals and partials about 5 times a weeks). However, I have had numerous side effects. I gained 30 lbs initially, but was able to lose most of the weight by changing birth control pills. I was slightly depressed for the first couple of years. My hair has thinned noticeably. I had constant breakouts for about 3 or 4 years. People close to me have noticed a change in my personality (mood swings especially). BUT I've stayed with Depakote because I haven't had ANY seizures since I began taking it. It works wonders for the seizures, but the side effects are horrible.
Works well for me with some side effects Weight gain, more memory problems than I had hoped, but no tonic/clonic or gran mals in six months. The hunger associated with the drug is worse for me that quitting nicotine! It is five times worse than dieting.

Works well for me Depakote has controlled my seizures for the most part for the majority of my time on seizure meds. I have an occasional breakthrough seizure, but it can almost always be traced back to a missed dose or lack of sleep.

I have not had too many side effects, which is what drove me away from other meds. I'm not overly tired, and have not had a problem with weight gain. I did, however, have a pregnancy years ago that resulted in the fetus having a neural tube defect (anencephaly). I did take the Depakote throughout the pregnancies of my 2 living children, with no ill effects noticed as of yet.
Works well for dysphoric mania/agitation Works well but has caused some weight gain. Some transient hair loss in the beginning, not noticeable. It has worked better than any other I've been on. I was on it for several years before this year, a Psychiatrist decided it was time for a change.???
Works Great, But. . . I took Depakote ER for over a year and while it significantly helped my impulse control problems (particularly my angry outbursts), the weight gain I experienced while on it (15-20 pounds) was prohibitive. I also experienced some memory loss, particularly in conversations--could not recall words and phrases, would stop in the middle of a sentence and forget what I was talking about, for instance. I could have dealt with the memory problems but the weight gain increased my depression and forced me to discontinue the medication. Now I'm trying to find one that works as well but without the weight gain!
works great on stabilizing my moods, have been on it for 5 years now, but am unsure if it may have a side effect of causing drowsiness, and am extremely unhappy with the known side effect of weight gain, in my case being approximately 40 lbs. also, does not seem to help me with my moderate social phobia. i take depakote er, the gray tablets, and take 1500 mg at bedtime. my depakote level runs on the high end averaging about 120. am going to try weaning into tegretol shortly to help address the weight gain.
Works Great - weight gain side effects though This is the only medicine that works for my Bipolar. I have also tried Lamictal and Lithium with no success. This Medicine has been a miracle drug for me allowing me to live a balanced and productive life. I have tried numerous times to quit taking this medicine and everytime my life falls to pieces. The only downside is that I have gained quite a bit of weight. This stuff kills your metabolism. But having to chose between stability and weight is an easy choice. I have to admit my eating habits arent the best and I don't exercise so I am sure this adds to my weight problem.
works for some stuff This stuff changed my life. Now I just need somthing else for the rest of my conditions. It was originally actually prescribed for Borderline Personality disorder & that's what it's actually helped a lot with, but it's made some difference in the bi-polar as well.

Drug Uses

Depakote is used for controlling certain types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. It is also used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorders (manic-depressive illness), and to prevent migraine headaches.

How to use

Use Depakote as directed by your doctor.

Take Depakote by mouth with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
Swallow Depakote whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
Taking Depakote at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
Continue to use Depakote even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. Depakote works best when there is a constant level of it in your body.
Drug Class and Mechanism

Depakote is an anticonvulsant. It works by reducing or preventing the number of seizures by controlling the abnormal activity of nerve impulses in the brain and central nervous system.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Depakote, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Storage

Store Depakote at room temperature, below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Depakote out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Warnings/Precautions

Do not use Depakote if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Depakote;
you have a history of liver conditions, low levels of the enzyme ornithine carbamoyltransferase, or a urea cycle disorder.
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Important :
Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
Do not stop taking Depakote suddenly. This may cause seizures.
Inflammation of the pancreas is a potentially life-threatening illness associated with Depakote. Symptoms include stomach pain, vomiting, or appetite loss. Contact your doctor at once if any of these symptoms occur.
Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Depakote before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
Diabetes patients - Depakote may cause the results of some tests for urine ketones to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Lab tests, including blood cell counts and liver function tests, may be performed while you use Depakote. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
Use Depakote with caution in the elderly; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially sleepiness.
Depakote should be used with extreme caution in children younger than 10 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. Children younger than 2 years of age may be at increased risk of serious liver problems
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Depakote has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor.
