Reviews/Feedback:
worked to prevent worked well to prevent the onset of the cluster headaches - but had to remember to take at the correct times
Verpamil I have been taking this med for many years for high BP and was recently dx with FMS. It does nothing to help with alertness or helping memory loss for me anyway. Does work good for me for the high BP though. Hope others have better luck than I on it.
Verapamil Verapamil was first prescribed for me to treat high blood pressure, but I've heard it also aids in headache pain.
Verapamil part of preventive regimen for headaches Hi everybody, I been placed on 240 mg of Verapamil for part of my preventive care regimen for my cluster and migraine headaches. I also take neurontin and zomig for my abortive treatment. With this treatment I'm getting full relief and have my life back.
Verapamil I have been using for eye symptoms.. I get silvery bubbles in my sight and blurriness, doesn't help to much, but better than before.
Verapamil 120 mg SR Worked for My Migraines Around mid-November 2004 I started developing severe migraines and began a regimen of Verapamil 120 mg SR (sustained-release) once per day on December 11th. It took approximately 8 weeks before I truly started noticing relief and at first, I must admit the headaches became worse before they improved. I'm not sure if that was due to the Verapamil or my own anxiety, but I peaked in intensity around January 1-3, 2005 and then they started to subside. I should also mention that I am on a regular aerobic/weight-training exercise routine that began Jan 12 and involves daily aerobic exercise, currently at 27 minutes with weight-training 3 times per week. In addition to Verapamil, I have completely eliminated caffeine, alcohol, and aged cheese from my diet--three known major migraine triggers. Hopefully it is the combination of these changes with the Verapamil that has made the difference.
Undecided This is the second time I've been on Verapamil for prevention. The first time, 1996-1998, I experienced much success. After about 1 month of taking it daily (w/heavy Anaprox for abortive treatment), I literally was headache free for years (& never had to use the Anaprox - - which I've found doesn't work for me as an abortive med. anyway). In 1998, because of the good results I was slowly taken off the Verapamil and was free of the "life-altering," 5-day migraine "episodes" through 2002. As of this past July, 2002, the debilitating migraine episodes have returned (average 2 per month, 4-5 days per headache). I started on the Verapamil again in the beginning of October and thought I noticed a slight improvement in duration and intensity. I've had 4 migraines since that time and only one has been an intense, hellish, life-altering episode. The other 3 lasted just 1-3 days, which I consider an improvement. I've also got Axert for abortive use, but that didn't work. So, as of this time, I'm not having the great results that I did a few years ago, but will update this review if I notice a trend either way.
pain free I was taking 180mg for about 4 months and my migraines were starting to come back.My doctor then increased the dosage to 240mg.I have been pain free for 3 months now.I take one pill at bedtime and sleep wonderfully.I have noticed slight dizziness when standing up too fast, but my knees are bad and I have trouble doing that anyways!
My 12 yr. old son has suffered from Migraine's for awhile. After trying several different medications this one finally did the job :) He's been taking it for almost 2 months and no migraine's.
Migraines are so much better :) I started taking this med maybe 2-3 weeks ago and I have had only one migraine. This for me is awesome, as I was having them daily or at least every other day. The only side effect was at first I was a little tired but I am getting used to it now. Hopefully it continues to work :)
It needs a holiday I had cluster attacks followed by 8 hr-5 day pressure headaches. After trying the whole line of "headache" prescriptions, I was placed on 480mg daily verapamil. In three weeks clusters were reduced to 1 a month. However, the verap dose caused severe constipation that could not be controlled w/o constant & strong laxative. Verap dose was lowered to 240 mg daily. This resolved all gastric issues. The verapamil will keep my headaches at bay for 6-8 months. Then the headaches come back with an attitude. After a 4 week verapamil drug holiday, I begin on the verapamil again. After 3 weeks headaches will be back under control. I have recently combined verapamil with 10mg daily of singulair. This combo appears to have further reduced the frequency (though not the severity) of my headaches.
I've been taking 120 mg/day for the past 6 months for the prevention of severe headaches. I have had only 2 headaches since starting this med.

Drug Uses

This drug is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction and in controlling the electrical impulses within the heart. By blocking calcium, calan relaxes and widens blood vessels and can normalize heartbeats. Calan is used to treat chest pain (angina), high blood pressure or irregular heartbeats. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible problems related to use of short-acting calcium channel blockers.

How to use

This medication should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water unless your doctor directs you otherwise. This medication must be taken as directed to prevent chest pain. It is not effective if taken only when chest pain occurs. Do not stop taking this medication suddenly without your doctor's permission. Chest pain can occur if the medication is stopped too fast. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Calan belongs to a class of medications, called calcium channel blockers. These medications block the movement of calcium into the muscle cells of the coronary arteries (the arteries supplying the heart) as well as the other arteries of the body. Since calcium is what triggers contraction of muscles, blocking entry of calcium relaxes the arterial muscles. This relaxation allows the arteries to become larger so that more blood can flow through them. Thus, calan is useful in treating and preventing chest pain (angina) resulting from spasm (contraction) of the coronary arteries that reduces the flow of blood to the heart. Relaxing the muscles lining the arteries in the rest of the body lowers blood pressure and thereby reduces the pressure against which the heart must pump blood. As a result, the heart works less and requires less oxygen-carrying blood. This allows the heart to work with the reduced flow of blood caused by coronary artery disease and prevents angina (which occurs whenever the flow of blood to the heart is inadequate). Calan also decreases the conduction of electrical impulses through the heart that control the coordination of contraction. As a result, the rate of contraction slows.
